A long (and long overdue) post about Roxette Bunny™

By Silver Blue | 1 comment

Roxette Bunny™ is the cutest, truest, and sky bluest bunny that has ever existed. She hopped into my life in 2003, and made herself right at home. She’s a great travel companion, and being that she recently traveled to Virginia Beach with me, I thought it best to take you back in time… back to Kenton, Ohio, when they were having the “Little Chicago” night in 2003 as a fundraiser to help restore the Hardin County Armory.

My late grandmother (Katie Cottle), my mom’s teacup Chihuahua (“Miette”), and Roxette (in nothing more than a bow! Scandalous!)

Hopping uptown to explore the festivities.

Paying homage to fallen heroes at the Liberty Garden.

Here, Roxette pauses to pose on the steps of the Armory.

Gazing in the windows to see what renovations have taken place (I hope her eyes were better than mine — I couldn’t see through the curtain!)

Lending a paw to the Emergency Crew of the “B-K-P Life Squad”

Inside the Armory, Roxette causes a stir by invading the men’s room!

She took some time out to raise money for scholarships…

…and oversaw the cooking of 100 chickens.

Her eye was caught (as was mine) by the silver and blue computer case in the window….

….and was distracted by looking for carats. (Carrots? Well, DIAMONDS are a girl’s (and bunny’s) best friend. LOL)

Hopping to the Arcade in search of Family Fun.

Reading about the history of the courthouse.

In front of the courthouse. A Grand Old Building.

Here, we find Roxette eying the goods at Kenton Surplus.

All that Hopping gives tiny blue bunnies a great thirst!

Roxette wanted to catch a film (Showing? Spy Kids 3D, Tomb Raider 2, and Pirates of the Carribean).

Unfortunately, she couldn’t get someone IN the ticket booth to sell her a ticket.

So, she looks at a historic site (now a parking lot) and comments on how it would be a LONG way down.

Deciding what flowers to send Grandma. The building behind her used to be a laundromat and the Wards store in town.

Roxette proves that even small blue bunnies, when they pop out of the mailbox, can startle the mailman.

Even bunnies like to have fun, and sliding down the banister is just the thing!

Roxette was to go to New Orleans with me, to Florida, Nags Head, and other places… so you may see those photos at some point in the future.

The Calm Before The Storm

By Silver Blue

The year: 2003 The month: September. The day: 18th.

The Hurricane? Isabel.

The radar?

(This photo NOT taken by me, obviously)

Isabel, as she approached North Carolina.

The day before, however, all was calm, all was… bright.

and then the clouds started up…

and increased in volume…

Then, as night fell, we had no clue…

That what was being classified as a “minor” hurricane to hit Hampton Roads (some say a weak Category 1, some a regular, some a weak Category 2 depending on where and when you were hit) would leave us without power for 12 days, without a furnace or hot water for 3 months (due to the basement taking in 5.5 feet of water back through the sump well, destroying the furnace and hot water heater), and without a “complete” roof for 7 months.

Still, Mother Nature has a way of showing that life goes on… just four days after the wrath of Hurricane Isabel…

Another view of DC

By Silver Blue

Taken in 2000. Cold. Snowy in some sections of town. But I never knew things like this existed:

I’ve heard of the Great Pyramids of Giza. But the Minor Pyramids of DC? Actually, it looks (to me) more like skylights.

What we could consider, today, a steel representation of an outfit that perhaps Lady Gaga would wear, I never could discern exactly WHAT this was supposed to be.

I seem to have a penchant for finding bunny sculpture wherever I go. 12 years ago was no exception. 🙂

Finally…. oh, to harken back to high school and…

The dreaded TYPEWRITER ERASER! LOL. Why someone felt the need to enlarge one and make it “art” is beyond me, but… it made me smile then, and still does today.

Just a couple days late…

By Silver Blue

But…

Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!

From my trip to New Orleans in 2003:

The Jackson Brewery, just before a massive thunderstorm.

I loved the saturation of colours and tones in this photo:

It has not been manipulated in any way other than to size down for placing on the web.

This photo also appears in my photo biography. Its a busy photo, but other than the tourists in the bottom right corner, I can’t think of anything I could have removed in order to simplify the picture.

A/C? No… D.C.

By Silver Blue

From a 2002 trip to Washington, D.C.

Outside, I think, the FDR memorial.

The Washington Monument. Taken from this side, you couldn’t see the construction (so much) going on near the base (you can see two cranes to the left of the monument, but that’s minimal compared to whatever they were doing in 2002).

The Jefferson Monument, with Jefferson visible. I liked the framing of this one.

Also from the Jefferson Monument…

Looking back on the Washington Monument.

A timely reminder, with all of our everyday struggles:

Perhaps at no time in our Country’s past was this more evident as when brother fought brother in the War Between the States:

I haven’t made it back up to D.C. to photograph as I’d wished either, and it’s a mere 3 hours up the road. Well, there’s always the spring, or summer… or autumn.

Is it the weekend yet?

By Silver Blue

Staying with my post from Toronto in July 2001…the infamous “Blue Light” Weekend Countdown

I’ll be honest that it would be nice to have a number of these around … just to build morale!

This is the “Old” City Hall. I’d tell you about it, but I’ll let them do it:

Love the architecture.  Love the history. Love the photographic opportunities.

The thing is, though, if I lived to be 100, and did nothing but shoot photos each and every day, I’d still not be able to capture all the memories I’d want to, to be able to tell the story of my life.

Of course, I’ll never look like this again, either.

How I loved those shoes. First pair I wore the soles off of in… a really long time.

Silver Blue, who says that more photos will be taken in 2012…. and my wish for you is best expressed through a song I’ve not heard in years… (from 1971)

“May a little bitty bit of sunshine come your way…
and a little bit of love and happiness everyday…
I wish you no goodbyes, but a new friend every morning…
clear blue skies, all the simple things in life that are good and true
that’s the world I wish for you…it’s the real thing…”

Memories of Yesteryear…

By Silver Blue

As you know, I’m a self proclaimed audiophile. I love music, of every type, every sort, every…everything. So, when I go to another area, away from where I live, I tend to want to seek out the music shops. One of the most famous that I’ve been to no longer exists. The facade does, because it’s historic, but the store is no more.

2001.

Toronto.

Sam, The Record Man. Yonge Street.

How I wish I’d been able to get a photo of it at night when those neon records would seem to “spin”.  But, back in those days… I wasn’t thinking that places like this might not always be around.
