Take me back to my childhood

By Silver Blue | 2 comments

Well, almost. I had an unexpected treat yesterday when in a candy store, I spied:

Fruit Stripe Gum!!!! This, Hubba Bubba, Bubblicious, Freshen Up (The Gum That goes SQUIRT!), Bazooka, and Chicklets were all the gum of my youth. Sure, there was Juicy Fruit, DoubleMint, and others, but…these were the ones that I remember most fondly, and I’d not seen in almost 35 years.

Silver Blue, who has sometimes, the past can be delicious.

Pieces of my past

By Silver Blue

There are certain things that will always remind me of my youth, and I’ve had the opportunity to capture a few of these in picture this evening.

This was from my Grandma on my mom’s side. He sat on a shelf in her kitchen for years. I mean… for YEARS.

There’s something underneath him as if he were at one time mounted on a pole or something like that. He’s heavy…made of solid metal except for those gleaming red eyes. Grandma gave him to me in the mid-80s, and he’s either been on the shelf above mom’s sink, or in her display case since then.

Dad brought back, from Japan, a pair of Kimono’d figurines.

(The sword hors d’oeuvres picks were from Greece (as is the wine decanter behind the male figure) when dad was in the Navy.  I gave him the Cherished Teddy Sailor for Father’s day about 15 years ago.)

When I was in High School, I ended up having to drop out of AP Algebra and take Algebra III at a local college. I helped a Chinese lady with her English, and she presented me with this watercolour. This would have been either fall 1984 or spring 1985, but she painted it in June 1983. I still remember the other option was a clown on a unicycle with balloons, but this more captured the Lucy I knew. 🙂

My room is pretty much as it was when I lived at my parents house, with a few minor changes. I was big into unicorns and suncatchers in high school:

The feathers were from Ohio — a cousin, if I recall correctly.

Finally, remember my logo? This one?

It’s still there. It’s just hidden now behind my mother’s collection of Furby’s (she has them all, except for the gem encrusted $100,000.00 FAO Swartz edition):

Years can’t take away these memories. 🙂

Always take a moment…

By Silver Blue

….when you celebrate and remember those who are not with you… be it distance, or if they’ve passed on. (Yes, I know I’ve mentioned this before in my post: https://www.eyesofsilverblue.com/?p=312 but I feel the need to revisit)

I have a tradition (that I’ve had since … 1986 or so) where I “turn down” a place setting for that particular reason. When the family gathers to celebrate, Mother’s, Father’s, Thanksgiving, or Christmas Day, there is always a place setting where the cup is inverted.

We’re coming upon numerous celebrations (US: Columbus Day/Canada: Thanksgiving Day; Veteran’s Day; US: Thanksgiving; Hanukkah, Christmas Eve/Day, New Year’s Eve/Day). Don’t forget…to remember.

It doesn’t have to be a solemn moment. It can be joyful. Do not grieve if they have passed; rejoice in the fact that they were in your life. Be not filled with sorrow they are not with you at that moment; celebrate that they are part of your here and now, and that you will see them again.

As you know, I often say “I am with you because you remember me.”

Silver Blue… who says… “I’ll be seeing you…in all the old familiar places.”

Or do I ever cross your mind…

By Silver Blue

Last night was a strange night, with strange dreams. Today has been a strange day. In all honesty, 2011 has been a strange year.

Even for all that, I stumbled across a photo of me, from years (and decades) gone by.

I’m old enough (I think) to sit up on my own (I may have been propped up — but still), so…that would have put this photo as late 1969, or very early 1970.

In the ensuing years, I’d like to think I’ve touched many lives. Sure, I could have done a better, more gentle “touch” to some people, but the past is the past, and I can’t go back and change that.

However, in everything that has passed (and that has gone on recently), I just wonder if I cross some people’s mind, and if they smile about the time when our paths joined.

Do you ever recall those old memories at all?

Silver Blue, who’s amazed by the number of will-o’-the-wisps that I’ve seen tonight, in my living room, as if they’re attempting to help me remember…something. If I could only figure out what it is.

The memories that are made to last…

By Silver Blue

…Continuing with the Christmas in July theme.

From December 1986.

The last time we really had a Christmas tree in my parents’ house.

The last time we had a real tree.

The last time…for a long time…that the season felt special.

As the song goes, “It’s not the presents under the tree, it’s your presence next to me.” Hard to believe we’d lose my grandpa in 1992, dad would have his heart attack in 2000, and we’d lose my grandmothers in 2004 and 2008.

Somehow, the “moment” and “memories” don’t seem a special as they used to.

But this was a memory that was made to last. So much so that I tracked down (on eBay) another angel like what is atop this tree (from my mom’s childhood) and bought it for myself.

Silver Blue, who says… “I am with you… because you remember me.”

Does it make you remember?

By Silver Blue

It’s amazing the things that can cause us to rocket back in time, to a timespace (Stevie Nicks used that word for her first greatest hits collection, and I find it to be very accurate) where our memories … well, they may not be as sharp as they used to be, but they still strum the chords of our herats.

Oh, how this does. From my room at my grandma’s house. The gold painted wallpaper. How something as simple as this makes me feel all of 5 years old again.

I actually wrote (when I was 13) my initials on the wallpaper in two different locations. Years later, I never could find the other.

Two other shots of the wallpaper:

and
