Norfolk
There may have been snow yesterday…
By Silver Blue
…but in my heart, it’s summer. Ergo, allow me to share an awesome shot of roses, taken last year at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens.

Butterfly, Butterfly
By Silver Blue | 1 comment
1Photo Phriday (6/22) found me at the Botanical Gardens once again, but this time in their Butterfly House:
They have 16 native types of butterflies that are raised through their entire life cycle. Egg, caterpillar, cocoon, butterfly, repeat
This is known as a Pipevine Swallowtail. Vibrant, colourful.
The more traditional “Monarch” butterfly, quite common in Virginia.
Known as the “Common Buckeye” butterfly, I could see how this could be mistaken for a moth.
We’ll leave the butterfly house with another view of the Pipevine Swallowtail.
It was a great day to photograph, even though the temperatures were in excess of 100F, and it was quite humid.

One more Tall Ship

Just because I love this photo.
Remember: Sing like no one is listening, Dance like no one is watching, and Love as if you’ve never been hurt. Your “heaven” is what you make it to be.
When I realized that this was only the 6th OpSail since 1964, I realized that I was part of something very special. There’s no guarantee I’ll be around for the next one — in body, or in locale.
Life is short. Take the chance. Follow your passion.
Do what makes YOU happy.
Others may try to stand in your way, to tell you that you can’t, or you shouldn’t, or that you mustn’t. But why? If it’s not hurting anyone else, then why not have a go at whatever it is? Colour your hair. Eat that cake. Run that marathon. Be what YOU want to be. Never look back on your life and wonder what might have been…your time could be up at any moment. A moment spent happy is NEVER a moment wasted.

Pushing fluids.
By Silver Blue
Have a nasty, non-productive cough. Myriad bizarre nightmarish dreams overnight. Ergo, rest, and lots of fluids have been the order of the day.
So, drink up, and rest. Yes. I think I shall. Have to be on my game tomorrow because Dad and I are taking mom for crab legs at Capt. George’s for Mother’s Day. That will make her happy! (Yes, she already knows of the plan.)

And so begins…

…the pattern of me taking Fridays off during the summer. Fridays will be designated as “Silver Blue’s Photography Days”. Yay!
After working exceedingly late last night, I’m exhausted tonight. Ergo….
A moment of Zen.
Candles are really good for bringing one back to centre.

I spy with my little eye….

….my state bird, the one I’m closest affiliated with, the Cardinal.
He was sitting up in the birch tree at the Botanical Gardens, attempting to play coy. 🙂
Since I’m going to be working later than normal tonight, this is as much of a blog entry as my brain can create.
Silver Blue, who will see everyone soon!
When dining…
By Silver Blue
…atmosphere is a good deal of the experience.
The food plays a good part too, but all too often you’re shoved in a cubicle with antiseptic lighting that takes all the fun out of eating. Fortunately, not every place is like that. Well, at least, not yet.
Hope you’ve had a good weekend, dear readers. It’s going to be an early evening for me.

Norfolk, VA. Granby Street. The Riverview Theater.
From http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/1598 :
Closed theater; 1 screen. 685 seats.
Photo from when it was open: (this is from the cinematreasures site)
Another classic Norfolk movie house, the Riverview Theatre was a roadshow theatre that kept a reserved seat policy and showed 70mm films such as “Cleopatra”, “Lawrence of Arabia” & “The Sound of Music”. In later years, the Riverview Theatre became a live theater venue.
Supposedly, from the comments on that site, the theater has been (or soon will be) condemned. It was on the market (with a far, far too small parking lot) for a little over $770,000.
I just … I feel sad that places like this, though they are small, are discarded due to “bigger, better, etc.” People seem to have no desire to preserve the past.
Therefore, I will bid a fond, yet early farewell to a theatre that I never set foot in, yet seemed to have a lot of character (and I’m sure, in its early days, lots of class, too!)
From http://www.flickr.com/photos/onasill/4011016591/ I found the following two photos, where the marquee had all of the lights!
(You can see the glass doors here that had been painted with the Riverview logo…)
and…
The sand keeps creeping through the hourglass…
Soon… all we’ll be left with are photographs, and cookie cutter buildings and places to go.

Taking the night off.
By Silver Blue
Sorry folks, but I’ve been in the heat all day at the Botanical Gardens. Had a blast, but the heat has gotten to me. So… I’ll give you two photos to tide you over:
Three beauties in a row…
And an egret in flight.
Okay. Okay. Two more. The stone lions I’m so fond of:
and a solo shot:
I think I boiled my brain today. Still…. the beauty of the 903 photos I took (and am still sorting through) will be with me long after the season has passed. 🙂

A bird’s eye view…

Yesterday offered me the opportunity to do something I’d spoken of for quite some time, but never had the opportunity to do. Go to the top of the parking deck beside our building and get pictures of our building, then reverse position and capture the football stadium.
It looks to different from above!
The problem I had was finding time to be able to get to the top and photo — Before they changed the parking patterns, it was hard to find a space in the upper levels that would have allowed access. A Saturday afternoon, however, spelled no such problems.
It’s really interesting because from ground level, you can’t see ANY of the black construction on the roof:
This photo was taken April 29, 2003 — before they built the parking deck, before the moved the building sign from south to north, and when we obviously had a malfunctioning front door, which seems to be stuck open.
Switching sides of the parking deck:
S. B. Ballard Stadium at Foreman Field. Home to Monarch Football.
There’s talk of expanding the stadium by taking out the bleachers on the far end. (On the near end are luxury suites and club house boxes).
Feel the Roar. BE the Roar.
Come alive and show that Monarch Pride! Still, love the glow of the afternoon sun from atop the deck. These were taken just before the banquet I photographed last night, and last night’s blog photos were taken after that event. Strangely enough, even with continually raising my camera to my eye, I wasn’t “seeing” a lot of photos to be taken. There were 298 taken in the 3+ hour banquet, and those are being provided to the client, but I only managed 13 shots before and 9 shots after…it wasn’t one of my more “creative” days.
